Honda Develops AR-Powered Chair for Theme Park Adventures

Honda is set to unveil its latest innovation, the UNI-ONE, at the upcoming SXSW Conference in Texas. This cutting-edge mobility device is designed for mixed reality entertainment experiences, allowing users to navigate without using their hands—simply leaning in a direction propels them forwards, backwards, sideways, or diagonally. The intention is to integrate the UNI-ONE with mixed reality devices for a fully immersive gaming or activity experience.

Despite its seemingly futuristic nature, Honda has been rigorously testing the UNI-ONE in various use cases in Japan since the previous year. One notable test took place at the Suzuka Circuit Park in Mie, Japan, where users had to control the mobility device based on scenes displayed on a tablet. At SXSW, attendees will have the opportunity to ride the UNI-ONE while wearing a virtual reality headset, engaging in a choose-your-own VR adventure.

The UNI-ONE boasts an adjustable seat, allowing users to raise or lower it for improved communication with others. Operating on battery power, it is untethered, reaching a maximum speed of 3.7 mph and accommodating passengers weighing up to 242 pounds. Honda envisions diverse applications for the device in entertainment, foreseeing its use in both indoor and outdoor experiences, such as racing games in theme parks and similar facilities.
